"But now a righteousness from God, apart from the law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify." – Romans 3:21

 

Romans 3:21-31 finally introduces the ''good news'' part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Up to this point, Paul has shown that even following the law cannot spare us from God's judgment for our sins. Now, Paul announces that, through faith in Christ, we can be made righteous in God's sight. Entirely apart from the law, we can be redeemed by the atoning sacrifice of Christ's blood, willingly shed for our sins. This gift of God's grace, rather than wrath, is available to everyone, Jews and Gentiles alike. This is truly good news!

 

The words "but now" that begin this verse may be two of the most important words in the Bible. In the previous verse, Paul said that "by works of the law no human being will be justified" in God's sight. Nobody can keep the law perfectly, and no person lives a life worthy of God's righteousness (Romans 3:10). Things sound bleak. If even law followers cannot escape God's angry judgment, what hope do we have?Finally, Paul turns the corner to the main point of Romans: "But now." A significant shift has occurred in human history. The thing none of us could live up to—God's righteousness—has now been manifested, or "made known," apart from the law. In other words, Paul will go on to say there is hope. There is a path to righteousness that does not require us to keep God's law. Paul adds that this new thing has not been unexpected. The Law and the Prophets have been pointing to God's righteousness. God's plan was always to arrive at this "but now" as a way for humans to be saved. 

 

The people who do not know Christ are spiritually dead. Only born-again people can respond to the Holy Spirit's testimony and understand Christ's glory. However, people in Christ live a new life by gaining life through the Spirit of God (Romans 6:4). God has moved us from hell to heaven, from being enslaved to being free, from darkness to light, from despair to hope, from wrath to glory, and from death to life. Then we can't help but ask this question: Who can receive salvation? First, we need to know that salvation is not by works. "Not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:9). The world where we live demands action in everything. Some people believe their deeds can save them. However, the Bible teaches that men cannot earn salvation through their own strength and ability.

 

The reason for not being able to earn salvation by deeds is so that no one can boast. Heaven would be filled with people like the proud and arrogant Pharisees if our actions achieved salvation. Pharisees thanked God for not being like the robbers, evildoers, or adulterers (Luke 18:11). With the illustration of a lamb and a goat, Jesus says the arrogant people will be judged (Matthew 25:46; 7:22). The lambs on the right do not remember even their good work, as Jesus said. Since salvation doesn't come from deeds, a saved person cannot boast before the presence of God. 

 

Additionally, another reason for not receiving salvation through deeds is that our sinful nature cannot meet God's righteous standard. God is righteous (Romans 1:17; 3:21), and we are under His judgment (Romans 3:10-18). The thoughts and actions of a man are corrupt. Even if we show beautiful deeds, they are tainted with sin, and we can't come to God, who demands complete righteousness. Even if we climb up the ladder of ethics and good morals, the ladder cannot reach the standard of God's righteous height. Only through Christ is there a way because Christ Jesus is the truth and the life.

“이제는 율법 외에 하나님의 한 의가 나타났으니 율법과 선지자들에게 증거를 받은 것이라” - 롬3:21

 

바울은 로마서 3장의 마지막 부분인 3:21-31에서 예수 그리스도의 복음을 소개합니다. 그는 율법을 지킴으로 죄에 대한 하나님의 심판을 받지 않을 수 없다고 지금까지 주장했습니다. 그러나 이제 죄인인 우리가 그리스도를 믿음으로 하나님 앞에서 의로운 자가 될 수 있다고 선포합니다. 율법을 지키는 것과는 무관하게 우리의 죄를 위해 흘리신 그리스도의 피의 대속의 희생으로 죄사람을 받게 되었습니다. 유대인과 이방인 모두가 예수를 믿음으로 하나님의 진노 대신 은혜의 선물을 받게 된 것입니다. 이것이 진정한 복음인 것입니다. 

 

위의 구절이 시작하는 "이제는"이라는 단어는 성경에서 가장 중요한 단어입니다.  바울은 앞 구절에서 하나님 보시기에 율법의 행위로 의롭게 되는 사람은 없다고 합니다. 아무도 율법을 완벽하게 지킬 수 없으며, 하나님의 의에 합당한 삶을 사는 사람도 없습니다(롬 3:10). 이러한 말씀의 상황은 우리에게 암울하게 들립니다. 율법을 지키는 사람들까지도 하나님의 진노의 심판을 받는다면 우리에게 무슨 소망이 있겠습니까?

 

바울은 로마서의 핵심인 "이제는"의 말씀으로 방향을 바꾸어 인류 역사의 가장 중요한 변화를 말합니다. 누구도 율법으로 하나님의 의의 수준으로 구원받을 수 없기 때문에 이제 그리스도의 복음이 나타나고 알려진 것입니다. 바울은 하나님의 율법을 완전히 지키지 않고도 소망을 가질 수 있는 하나님의 의에 이르는 새로운 길이 있다고 말합니다. 그는 이 새로운 길은 예상치 못한 일이 아니었고 율법과 예언서는 하나님의 의를 예언해 왔다고 합니다. 인간이 구원받는 방법은 "이제는" 복음으로 하나님의 의에 이르는 것이 항상 하나님의 계획이었습니다. 

 

그리스도를 믿지 않는 자들은 영적으로 죽은 사람들입니다. 거듭나지 않은 사람은 성령의 역사에 반응하지 못하고, 그리스도의 영광을 이해하지 못합니다. 그러나 그리스도 안에 있는 자들은 하나님의 영으로 새 생명을 얻어 새로운 삶을 살아 갑니다(롬 6:4). 하나님은 우리를 지옥에서 천국으로, 종에서 자유인으로, 어둠에서 빛으로, 절망에서 희망으로, 진노에서 영광으로, 죽음에서 생명으로 옮겨주셨습니다. 그렇다면 이러한 질문을 하게 됩니다. 누가 구원을 받을 수 있는가? 먼저 구원은 행위로 받지 않음을 알아야 합니다. "행위에서 난 것이 아니니 이는 누구든지 자랑하지 못하게 함이라"(엡 2:9). 우리가 살고 있는 세상은 모든 일에 행위를 요구합니다. 어떤 사람들은 자기의 행위로 구원받을 수 있다고 믿습니다. 그러나 성경은 인간이 자기의 힘과 능력으로 구원을 얻을 수 없다고 가르칩니다.

 

행위로 구원을 얻지 못하는 이유는 아무도 자랑하지 못하게 하기 위함입니다. 행위로 구원을 얻는다면 천국에는 바리새인들처럼 교만하고 자랑하는 사람들로 가득 차게 될 것입니다. 바리새인들은 강도, 행악자, 간음하는 자와 같지 않은 것에 대해 감사했습니다(눅 18:11). 예수님은 어린 양과 염소의 비유로 교만한 백성이 심판을 받는다고 말씀하시며(마 25:46; 7:22) 오른편에 있는 양들은 그들이 행한 선행조차 기억하지 못한다고 말씀합니다. 구원은 인간의 행위에서 오지 않기 때문에 구원받은 자는 주님 앞에서 자랑할 수 없습니다. 

 

행위로 구원을 받지 못하는 또 다른 이유는 우리의 죄의 본성이 하나님의 의로운 기준에 도달할 수 없기 때문입니다. 하나님은 의로우시기 때문에(롬 1:17; 3:21) 인간은 그의 심판을 받게 되어 있습니다(롬 3:10-18). 사람의 생각과 행위는 모두 부패해져 있기 때문에 우리가 아름다운 행위를 가져도 완전한 의를 요구하시는 하나님께 나아갈 수 없습니다. 우리가 윤리와 선한 도덕의 사다리로 올라간다 해도 그 사다리는 하나님의 의의 높은 기준에 도달할 수 없습니다. 오직 길과 진리와 생명이신 예수 그리스도를 통해서만 하나님께 나갈 수 있습니다.
