"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place." – Acts 2:1

 

 

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told His followers to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5). The eleven remaining apostles, along with the women who were so important to Jesus' ministry, Jesus' mother, Mary, Jesus' brothers, and dozens of others, settle into the upper room of a house to pray and confer (Acts 1:12-15). For about nine days, they have little to do but praise God (Luke 24:52 53) and choose a successor to Judas (Acts 1:12 26). They are likely in this room when Acts 2 opens."All together" is from the Greek root word home, related to the term homothymadon, translated as "one accord" in Acts 1:14. It may mean "together in a group." Still, spiritually, it refers to many individuals working together harmoniously. This attitude will characterize the church in Jerusalem for years to come. They will face many challenges, including persecution (Acts 8:1), opposition from within (Acts 11:1–18; 21:17–24), and the inclusion of Gentiles who do not share the Jewish background of the founding apostles (Acts 15:1–35). In all these things, the church leaders of Jerusalem strive to maintain a unified front as they seek guidance from the Holy Spirit.

 

Christians have two important relationships: a vertical relationship of faith with God and a horizontal relationship of love and harmony with people. Therefore, the Bible teaches us about both relationships. Specifically, it teaches Christians how to live in harmony with one another and with those who do not believe. Christians should put their minds together. The apostle Peter recommends, "Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble" (1 Peter 3:8). The early church worshipped and served God together with a unified mind and heart. Christians should not be individualistic or selfish. Instead, Christians should be communal and mutual in one purpose: loving God and sharing the Gospel with others. 

 

God calls us his children. Therefore, we must live with our brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. God wants us to grow up in Jesus by knowing Him and believing in Him (Ephesians 4:13). When all members of an orchestra play their instruments in harmony with the maestro, we hear beautiful music. Similarly, each player should play their role effectively in a team sport to achieve victory. We have different backgrounds, education, personalities, and tastes, but when we have one faith and one goal, our faith grows together, and our church becomes a community God wants.

 

Unity and harmony in church life begin with me. When we obey God's guidance, we unite with God, and all believers come together in unity. When a church exhibits disharmony and chaos, sin begins to take hold. The solution to this problem is not reorganizing the church but a spiritual revival. Paul said, "Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel" (Philippians 1:27). We saints have to serve God and His church with only one communal goal, which is expanding the kingdom of God.

“오순절 날이 이르매 저희가 다 한 곳에 모였더니” - 행 2:1

 

 

예수님은 제자들에게 예루살렘에 머물면서 성령을 기다리라고 말씀하시고 승천하셨습니다(행 1:4-5). 11명의 남은 제자들은 예수님과 함께 공생애 사역에 중요한 역할을 했던 그의 어머니 마리아, 예수님의 형제들, 그리고 수십 명의 사람들과 함께 예루살렘의 한 다락방에 모여 기도하고 있었습니다(행 1:12-15). 그들은 약 9일 동안 하나님을 예배하며(눅 24:52-53) 가롯 유다를 대신할 사도를 뽑기 위해 기도하고 있었습니다(행 1:12-26). 사도행전 2장이 시작되는 배경의 말씀은 사도들이 다락방에 함께 모여 기도하는 모습입니다.   

 

"저희가 다 한 곳에"라는 말씀은 사도행전 1:14의 "마음을 같이하여"의 헬라어 “호모티마돈”과  관련된 헬라어 어원 “호무”에서 유래한 말입니다. 이 단어는 문자적으로 "집단으로 함께"라는 의미도 있지만 영적으로는 함께 조화를 이루며 함께 일하는 많은 사람들을 가리킵니다. 이러한 함께 일하는 태도는 수년 동안 예루살렘 교회의 특징으로 나타납니다. 그들은 박해와(행 8:1), 내부에서의 반대(행 11:1-18; 21:17-24), 그리고 초기 사도들과 같은 유대적 배경을 가지고 있지 않은 이방인들을 용납하는 문제(행 15:1-35) 등 많은 어려움과 도전에 직면합니다.  예루살렘 교회의 지도자들은 일치된 전선을 유지하기 위해 성령의 인도를 위해 기도합니다.  

 

그리스도인들의 두 개의 중요한 관계는 하나님과의 수직적 믿음의 관계와 사람들과의 사랑과 조화의 수평적 관계입니다. 성경은 이 두 관계에 대해 가르치고 있는데, 특히 믿는 자들이 다른 믿는 자들과, 그리고 불신자들과 어떻게 함께 살아가야 하는지를 가르칩니다. 그리스도인들은 마음을 같이 하며 사랑해야 합니다. 베드로는 "마지막으로 말하노니 너희가 다 마음을 같이하여 동정하며 형제를 사랑하며 불쌍히 여기며 겸손하며”라고 말합니다. 초대교회는 한 마음으로 함께 하나님을 예배하고 서로 섬겼습니다. 그리스도인들은 개인주의적 이거나 이기적이 되어서는 안 됩니다. 그리스도인들은 하나님을 사랑하고 다른 사람들과 복음을 나누는 한 가지 목적 안에서 서로 도우며 공동체의 삶을 살아야 합니다.  

 

하나님은 우리를 그의 자녀라고 부르십니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도 안에서 다른 형제 자매들을 사랑하며 함께 살아야 합니다. 우리가 하나님을 알고 예수님 안에서 믿음으로 성장하는 것이 하나님의 뜻입니다(엡 4:13). 오케스트라의 단원들이 지휘자에 따라 함께 연주할 때  아름다운 조화의 음악을 듣습니다. 운동 경기에서 선수들 각자가 자신의 역할을 잘해야 하고 반드시 함께 승리해야 합니다. 우리는 배경, 교육, 성격, 취향이 각기 다르나 하나의 믿음과 하나의 삶의 목표를 가질 때에 믿음이 성장하고 하나님이 원하시는 교회 공동체가 됩니다. 

 

교회 생활의 일치와 조화는 나 자신으로부터 시작됩니다. 하나님의 인도하심에 순종하고  하나님과 연합하여 모든 믿는 자들이 일치할 때 교회의 사명을 감당할 수 있습니다. 그러나 교회가 일치하지 않고 혼란 속에 빠지면 죄가 역사하기 시작합니다. 이러한 문제의 해결은 교회를 새롭게 조직하는 것이 아니라 영적으로 새로워지고 부흥하는 것입니다. 바울은 "오직 너희는 그리스도의 복음에 합당하게 생활하라 이는 내가 너희에게 가보나 떠나 있으나 너희가 한마음으로 서서 한 뜻으로 복음의 신앙을 위하여 협력하는 것과”(빌 1:27)라고 말합니다. 성도들은 공동의 목표인 하나님의 나라를 확장을 위해 하나님과 그의 교회를 섬겨야 합니다.
