“In reply, Jesus declared, 'I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.' – John 3:3

 

 

John, chapter 3, is one of the most important parts of the entire Gospel. This passage explains several crucial ideas, including the role of Jesus as Savior. John transitions to a quiet nighttime discussion after the loud, public commotion at the temple. These verses clarify that Christ—and Christ alone—is the means of salvation for the entire world. This text also states that those who reject Jesus are rejecting God.

Jesus explains that people cannot be redeemed unless they are "born again." The Greek phrase can also be translated as "born from above." Nicodemus doesn't fully understand this. People frequently misinterpret Jesus' spiritual teachings in overly physical ways. The question Nicodemus asks in verse 4 about re-entering a mother's womb proves that he knows physical birth is not what Jesus means. He is asking Jesus to explain the idea further.This concept of rebirth is critical for understanding the gospel. Children inherit the attributes of their parents: to be a "child of God" is no small thing! This also implies the associations of change and pain involved in childbirth. The change is mostly on the part of the child, but the pain is mostly on the part of the parent. In this case, the pain God suffers, in the form of Jesus on the cross, produces rebirth and change in those who turn to Him for salvation.

 

If we ask someone, “Are you a born-again Christian?” we receive three basic answers: “Well, I’m not sure,” “No, I’m not,” Or “Yes, I am a born-again Christian.” Many Christians today live mere emotional Christian lives without having been born again. However, being born again is one of the most important events in a Christian’s life. It is important because a Christian’s life starts after the born-again experience. 

 

Being born again is needed for Nicodemus and everyone on earth. Nicodemus sought Jesus because he had never been born again, even though he was religious and upright. Nicodemus said to Jesus, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him” (John 3:2). Jesus replied to him, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3).

 

‘Born-again’ means ‘born for the second time’ and ‘spiritually born.’ Thus, Jesus said, “No one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the spirit” (John 3:5). And He added, “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit” (John 3:6). Jesus showed that being born-again is possible only through God’s grace, and not by human efforts and methods. Human efforts and religious life do not help us achieve spiritual rebirth. Only God could satisfy our emptiness and fill our spiritual needs.

 

God promised through the prophet Ezekiel, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26). God’s love in Christ enables us to be born again. Christ’s love on the cross forgave us and convinced us to be born again. Two things are needed. First, we need to be born again and forgiven. Second, we will be filled with the Spirit and live for God’s kingdom, not for our own success.

 

Today’s Prayer: Pray for those who serve in law enforcement that the stress of their jobs will not be too much for them to bear. Ask God to give them special strength to do their jobs well.

거듭난 그리스도인

 

“예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 진실로 진실로 이르노니 사람이 거듭나지 아니하면 하나님 나라를 볼 수 없느니라” - 요 3:3.

 

 

전체 복음서중에 요한복음 3장은 가장 중요한 부분으로 특히 3장 3절은 예수님께서 구원의 주님으로서의 역할을 포함하여 중요한 개념을 말씀하고 있습니다. 사도 요한은 성전에서 공개적인 소란이 있었다는 말씀 후에 조용한 밤의 대화를 기록하고 있습니다. 이 구절들에서 온 세상을 구원하실 분은 오직 그리스도뿐이라고 분명히 말합니다. 그리고 예수님을 배척하는 사람들은 곧 하나님을 배척하는 것이라고 말씀하고 있습니다.  

 

예수님은 사람이 "거듭나지" 않으면 구원받을 수 없다고 말합니다. 헬라어의 “거듭남”은 "위로부터 태어남"을 의미합니다. 니고데모는 거듭남의 의미를 이해하지 못합니다. 사람들은 종종 예수님의 영적인 교훈을 인간적으로 지나치게 잘못 해석했습니다. 니고데모가 4절에서 모태에 다시 들어가야 하는가의 질문은 육체적 출생이 예수님을 믿는다는 의미가 아닌 것을 알고 있었음을 증명합니다. 나고데모는 거듭남의 의미를 설명하도록 예수님께 요청합니다. 

 

거듭남의 개념을 바로 이해해야 복음을 알 수 있습니다. 자녀들은 부모의 속성을 물려받습니다: "하나님의 자녀"가 되는 것은 결코 작은 일이 아니며 거듭남은 또한 출산과 관련된 변화와 고통의 연관성의 의미도 있습니다. 출생할 때의 변화는 대부분 자녀의 몫이지만 고통은 대부분 부모의 몫입니다. 십자가에서 죽으실 때 하나님이 겪으신 고통은 하나님께 나오는 모든 자들을 구원하시는 사람들에게 거듭남과 변화를 가저오는 것입니다.  

 

"당신은 거듭난 그리스도인입니까?"라고 묻는다면, 세 가지 대답을 들을 수 있습니다. "잘 모르겠습니다", "아닙니다," 그리고 "예, 저는 거듭났습니다." 오늘날 많은 그리스도인들은 거듭나지 않고 단지 감성적인 그리스도인의 삶을 살고 있습니다. 거듭남이 그리스도인의 삶에서 가장 중요한 사건 중 하나인 이유는 그리스도인의 삶은 거듭남으로 시작되기 때문입니다.  

 

거듭남은 지상의 모든 사람에게 필요한 것입니다. 니고데모는 종교적이고 정직한 사람이었지만 거듭나지 않았기 때문에 예수님께 “우리가 당신은 하나님께로부터 오신 선생인 줄로 아나이다 하나님이 함께 하시지 아니하시면 당신이 행하시는 이 표적을 아무도 할 수 없음이니이다”(요 3:2)라고 말한 것입니다. 예수님은 니고데모에게 "내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 사람이 거듭나지 아니하면 하나님의 나라를 볼 수 없느니라"(요 3:3)고 대답하십니다. 

 

'거듭남'은 '두 번째로 태어남'의 의미와 '영적으로 태어남'의 의미가 있습니다. 예수님은 "사람이 물과 성령으로 나지 아니하면 하나님의 나라에 들어갈 수 없느니라"(요 3:5)고 말씀하시고 "육으로 난 것은 육이요 영으로 난 것은 영이니" (요 3:6) 3:6)라고 말씀합니다. 예수님은 거듭나는 것이 오직 하나님의 은혜로만 가능하고, 인간의 노력과 방법으로는 불가능하다는 것을 말씀하신 것입니다. 인간의 노력과 종교 생활은 영적으로 거듭나는 데 도움이 되지 않습니다. 오직 하나님만이 우리의 공허함을 만족시켜 주시고 우리의 영적 필요를 채워 주실 수 있습니다.

 

하나님께서는 에스겔 선지자를 통하여 "또 새 영을 너희 속에 두고 새 마음을 너희에게 주되 너희 육신에서 굳은 마음을 제거하고 부드러운 마음을 줄 것이며”(겔 36:26) 라고 약속하셨습니다.  그리스도 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑과 십자가에 나타난 예수님의 사랑이 죄용서와 거듭남의 확신을 줍니다. 우리에게 반드시 두 가지가 필요합니다. 첫째, 거듭나고 용서받는 것과, 둘째, 성령 충만함을 받아 자신의 성공이 아닌 하나님의 나라를 위해 살아가는 것입니다. 

 

오늘의 기도: 경찰이나 법을 집행하는 자들이 업무에서 오는 스트레스가 너무 부담이 되지 않도록 기도하고, 하나님께서 그들에게 특별한 힘을 주셔서 일을 잘 수행하도록 기도하십시오. 

기도 지침: 하나님의 인성의 사실을 의미하는 하나님에 관해 안다는 것과 하나님을 안다는 것은 다른 것이다. 우리는 기도를 하나님에 관한 정보들을 수집하는 하나의  과정으로 보고 어떤 기도의 관한 기술을 적용하려는 경향이 있다. 그러나 기도는 두 개인 간에 대인관계적의 소통이다. – 빙 햄 헌터
