"At that time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people know that you are, O LORD, are God, and you are turning their hearts back again." - 1 Kings 18:36-37

 

 

Arthur Pink commented on the shortness of Elijah's prayer in this way: 'One of the many evils engendered by lengthy prayers in the pulpit is the discouraging of simple souls in the pew: they are apt to conclude that if their private devotions are not sustained at length, then the LORD must be withholding from them the spirit of prayer.No soul is heard because of the multitude of his words, but only when his petitions come from the heart, are prompted by a longing for God's glory, and are presented in childlike faith.'

 

In his prayer, we can see his confidence in the covenant God of Israel. Elijah realized he should pray to God in the way he revealed Himself. It would have been wrong for Elijah not to do so. God loved to be addressed in the specific way he had shown himself to Moses at the burning bush before he was informed that he would lead the enslaved nation of Israel out of Egypt – as the LORD (Exodus 3). 

 

It is also clear from Elijah's prayer that he had a burning passion for the glory of God. He wanted the LORD's name to be known once again in Israel. As a prophet, he had no interest in despising the LORD's name. Neither does the LORD. When we make such a plea, it goes straight from our heart to his. He does all things for His glory. 

 

How can we express such passion today? Surely, the most important way is to focus on the Gospel. The Gospel is all about the glory of God. We don't focus on His glory as we should if we only concentrate on His abilities as a Creator, on a far lower level. This is like describing David Livingstone as only an explorer and missing out on the fact that he was also a gospel preacher. 

 

Should we stand idly by when evil, destructive things happen in our families, cities, and nations? Not! God wants us to be radical intercessors like Elijah. Our temperament may not be as fiery as his, but our prayers can be just as effective. James 5:17 observes that Elijah was a man "just like us," yet he prayed effectively. So great was his faith that he defied Israel's wicked king and queen and put their pagan prophets to shame.

 

After proving the LORD is the true God, which led many Israelites to repent, Elijah prayed until God acted to break the drought he had imposed upon Israel. Elijah's faith in the power of God led to showers of blessings on the people around him. Identify a situation where you are still waiting for God to fulfill His Word. Take a moment now to continue praying about it.

 

 

Today's Prayer: Ask God to disturb the hearts of the unsaved so they find no rest or satisfaction in anything from him (Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:17). Pray that the Holy Spirit will bring a strong conviction of sin to them. 

Prayer Pointer: Knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon and the supreme call for all Christians today, I urge our people everywhere to pray. Believing that prayer is the greatest contribution our people can make in this critical hour, I humbly urge that we take time to pray. Let there be prayer at sunrise, noon, sundown, midnight--all through the day. Pray for our children, youth, ages, pastors, and homes. Let us pray for our churches. Let us pray for ourselves that we may not lose the word 'concern' out of our Christian vocabulary. Let us pray for our nation. Let us pray for those who have never known Jesus Christ, for redeeming love, for moral forces everywhere, and for our national leaders. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice." - Robert E. Lee.

급진적인 기도

 

“저녁 소제 드릴 때에 이르러 선지자 엘리야가 나아가서 말하되 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 이스라엘 중에서 하나님이 되심과 내가 주의 종이 됨과 내가 주의 말씀대로 이 모든 일을 행하는 것을 오늘날 알게 하옵소서 여호와여 응답하소서 내게 응답하소서 이 백성으로 주 여호와는 하나님이신 것과 주는 저희의 마음을 돌이키게 하시는 것을 알게 하옵소서 하매” – 왕상 18:36-37

 

 

아서 핑크는 엘리야의 짧은 기도에 대해 다음과 같이 논평했습니다. “강단에서 긴 기도로 인해 야기되는 많은 좋지 않은  일중에 하나는 예배당에 있는 순진한 영혼들을 낙심시키는 일이다. 만일 그들의 사적인 경건이 오래 지속되지 않는다면, 주님은 기도의 정신을 그들에게서 거두어야만 한다고 결론을 내리기 쉬운 것이다. 그들의 수 많은 말때문에 어떤 영혼에게도 들리지 않지만 순진한 마음에서 나오는 어린아이와 같은 믿음을 가지고 하나님의 영광을 갈망하는 간구가 있을 때 자극을 받아 그때에만 들리는 것이다.”'

 

엘리야의 기도는 이스라엘의 언약의 하나님을 확신하는 기도입니다. 그는 하나님께서 자신을 계시하신 것처럼 기도해야 한다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그렇지 않으면 엘리야의 기도는 잘못되었을 것입니다. 모세가 애굽에서 이스라엘을 구출한다는 메시지 전에 하나님은 불타는 떨기나무에서 모세에게 계시하셨던 특별한 방법으로 해결하기를 원하셨습니다(출 3장).  

 

엘리야의 기도에서 하나님의 영광을 위해 불타는 열정을 그가 가지고 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 그는 주님의 이름이 다시 한번 이스라엘에게 알려지기를 원했습니다. 선지자로서 주의 이름이 멸시당하는 것에 그가 관심을 가지지 않을 수 없었습니다. 우리의 간구가 우리 마음에서 주님의 마음으로 직접 전달되면 주님은 자신의 영광을 위해 모든 것을 행하십니다.

 

오늘날 우리는 불타는 열정을 어떻게 표현할 수 있습니까? 가장 중요한 방법은 복음에 초점을 맞추는 것입니다. 복음은 모두 하나님의 영광에 관한 것입니다. 우리가 창조주의 능력에만 집중한다면 마땅히 드려야 할 그의 영광인 복음에 초점을 맞추지 않게 됩니다. 이것은 마치  리빙스턴을 단지 탐험가로 묘사하고 복음의 선교사였다는 것을 놓치는 것과 같습니다.  

 

우리 가정과 국가에 악하고 파괴적인 일들이 일어날 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 합니까? 가만히 있으면 안됩니다. 하나님은 우리가 엘리야처럼 급진적인 중보자가 되기를 원하십니다. 우리의 성정은 엘리야처럼 열정적이 아닐 수 있지만 기도는 엘리야 못지않게 기도할 수 있습니다. 야고보서 5:17엘리야는 "우리와 성정이 같은" 사람이었지만 놀아운 응답이 있었다고 말합니다. 그의 큰 믿음은 이스라엘의 왕들을 이기고 우상숭배 예언자들을 모두 수치스럽게 만들었습니다.

 

엘리야는 주님이 참 하나님이심을 증명하고 이스라엘 백성이 회개하도록 이끈 후, 하나님께서 이스라엘에 가뭄의 문제를 해결하실 때까지 간절히 기도했습니다. 하나님의 권능을 믿는 엘리야의 신앙은 사람들에게 축복의 소나기가 되었습니다. 하나님께서 그의 말씀을 성취하시려는  상황을 무엇인가 확인하고 시간을 내어 그 문제에 대해 계속 기도하십시오

 

 

오늘의 기도: 하나님을 떠나서는 만족과 안식이 없음을 알도록 믿지 않는 자들의 마음이 움직이도록 주님께 기도하고 (전 1:2; 2:17). 성령께서 그들에게 강한 죄책감을 가지도록 기도하십시오. 

기도 지침: 중보 기도를 아는 것은 우리의 힘 있는 무기이고 오늘 모든 그리스도인들을 향한 최상의 부름입니다.  우리 백성들이 어디에서나 기도하기를 간절히 원하십니다. 기도가 이 위급한 시간에 우리의 사람들 할 수 있는 가장 위대한 공헌이라고 믿으면서 겸손히 우리가 모두가 정한 시간을 가지고 진정으로 기도합시다. 겸손히 위급하게 부탁합니다. 아침과 정오, 저녁, 밤에, 온혼 종일 기도합시다. 모든 기도는 우리 자녀들, 청년들, 노인들, 우리 목사님들, 우리 가정들 위해 모두가 기도합시다. 우리의 교회를 위해서 기도합시다. 우리 자신들을 위해 기도하십시다. 그래서 그리스도인의 단어에서 “관심”이라는 말이 사라지지 않도록 기도합시다. 우리나라를 위해 기도합시다.  예수 그리스도를 전혀 알지 못하는 자들과 구속의 사랑과, 모든 곳에서 도덕적인 힘과, 국가의 지도자들을 위해 기도합시다.  우리의 기도가 뜨거울 수 있도록 기도합시다.  우리의 기도를 실천할 수 있도록 기도합시다. – 로버드 리
